Montreal with Kids: 8 Things to do in September 2018

They’re back to school. And in-between curriculum nights, packing healthy lunches and trying to juggle their extracurricular schedules, we still need to keep them entertained on the weekends. Lucky for us September weather is perfect for heading outdoors and soaking up the last day’s of summer sun. Plus, we live in a great city with so much happening, all of the time. Here are my top picks for what to do in Montreal with kids during the month of September.

The Delectable Weekends of Rougemont – September 8 to October 14

Apple picking season is officially upon us and the region of Rougemont is great to discover apple orchards not too far from Montreal. For the next few weekends, pick the orchard that best suits for your family and get ready for free tastings, entertainment, kids activities and more. If you’re able to slip away from your crew for a little while, you can even take a yoga class in an apple orchard! Le Potager Mont-Rouge Halte Gourmande is one of the most kid-friendly orchards with a tractor ride, corn maze, mini-farm, giant trampoline and more.

Prices vary by location

Open House on Quebec Farms – September 9

Over 100 farms throughout the province will open their barns to visitors to get in touch with nature this fall. For one day only, your family can learn about agriculture, see farm animals and try locally made products. Check out the comprehensive website to search by location and type of farm. If you’re not equipped to head out to the countryside, the Olympic Stadium will be hosting an event in conjunction with the day. There will be live demonstrations (sheep shearings), shows, and lots of delicious local food and drink to sample.

Free, 10am-4pm, Various locations

Fall Festival at Quinn Farm – September 15 to October 8, Weekends

Located on Île Perrot, this friendly farm is putting on a fall festival to coincide with apple picking season. Weekend guests will have access to the orchards via a tractor ride as well as the playard that can keep the kids entertained for at least an hour. There will be live music, pony rides (one per child with admission) and a guided walk through of the animal barn.

$9/person, kids under 2/free

West Island Mommies Family Fun Fair & Duck Race – September 16

Now in its 7th year, this event is not just for West Island families! While there will be over 40 local vendors on site, all with a focus on family, plenty of activities will keep everyone entertained. The highlight event is the Duck Race to raise funds for the Lakeshore General Hospital. Kids will enjoy face painting, storytime with princesses, a pet show and a chance to meet the PJ Masks characters.

Free, 10am-3pm, Holiday Inn Pointe Claire Airport

Dorval Soap Box Derby – September 23

There is nothing quite like a good, old soap box derby! Kids between the ages of 7-12 can sign up to participate in this event before September 10th. Everyone is invited to see which creation will win on the big day and enjoy various family-friendly activities.

Free, 9:30am-3pm, Fenelon Blvd., Dorval

Just for Kids Foundation Stroll for Kids – September 23

A fundraising event that teaches kids how to give back, all while having tons of fun. Registered families will enjoy a day at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Park in Cote Saint Luc to include a petting zoo, visits from princesses and reptiles, sing-alongs, laser tag, obstacles courses and so much more! Everyone will enjoy a gourmet lunch with stations from the likes of Moishes, Sumac, Tuck Shop, Chez Tousignant and more. All proceeds will benefit the Just for Kids Foundation to purchase high-priority medical equipment for the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Suggested family fundraising goal of $250, 9:30am-12:30pm

Nitro Circus – September 28

Nitro Circus: You Got This will feature Travis Pastrana (an action sports icon) along with Nitro Circus’ best athletes in FMX, BMX, Scooter and Inline, including multiple X Games medalists and several Nitro World Games champions. Pastrana will lead this all-star roster as they attempt both never before seen tricks and completely ill-advised stunts. This tour will debut new huge ramps and crazy contraptions. I’m giving away a four-pack of tickets to the show. Find out how to win here.

$58-$100, 7:30pm, Bell Centre

Les Journées de la Culture – September 28-30

There is no denying that Montreal is a city brimming with culture and now we have three days to experience it all! There are over 1500 free activities taking place but I’ve combed through them to find a few that are best for families. On Saturday, there will be a drawing and painting workshop for 7-12 year olds at the Académie des beaux-arts and a beginner hip hop class at Académie de Danse Scream. On Sunday at 1pm Jennifer Gasoi, the local Grammy award winning singer will be performing at Bibliothèque Reginald-J-P-Dawson. And check out the Puces Pop schedule for all of their Kids Pop activities too!
